Flame of the Forest: A Review on the Traditional and Modern Uses of Butea Monosperma

Abstract

Medicinal plants have been an important source of therapeutic agents in traditional healthcare systems for centuries. Among these, Butea monosperma (Lam.) Taub., commonly known as the Flame of the Forest or Palash, is a well-known medicinal plant widely distributed in the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia. The plant has been extensively used in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda, Unani, and various folk medicinal practices for the treatment of numerous diseases. Different parts of the plant including flowers, leaves, bark, seeds, and gum possess significant medicinal properties and have been traditionally used for managing conditions such as inflammation, skin disorders, intestinal infections, diabetes, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Phytochemical investigations of Butea monosperma have revealed the presence of various bioactive compounds such as flavonoids, glycosides, tannins, phenolic compounds, and terpenoids. These phytoconstituents contribute to the diverse pharmacological activities exhibited by the plant. Experimental studies have reported that extracts of Butea monosperma demonstrate significant biological activities including antidiabetic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and anticancer effects. These findings support the traditional therapeutic applications of the plant and highlight its potential as a valuable source of natural bioactive compounds. In recent years, increasing scientific interest has focused on exploring the potential of Butea monosperma for modern therapeutic applications. The plant shows promising prospects for drug discovery, herbal formulations, and nutraceutical development. However, further research, including clinical studies and detailed pharmacological investigations is required to fully validate its therapeutic efficacy and safety. This review aims to summarize the traditional uses, phytochemical constituents, pharmacological activities, and modern therapeutic applications of Butea monosperma, thereby providing comprehensive information on its medicinal significance.
