Antibiotic-resistant bacteria are a global problem that is becoming worse. In order to reduce the spread of infectious diseases, rigorous quality control, awareness of the community regarding antibiotics, decrease in the registration of novel antibiotics bacterial tolerance, as well as the patient's safety and the efficacy of therapy are essential factors. Cephalosporin is a subclass of beta-lactam antibiotics, was firstly isolated as a mixture of compounds from the mold Cephalosporium Acremonium by Italian scientist Giuseppe Brotzu in 1945. There are five generations of cephalosporin are developed till date and researchers have been improving the structural features of cephalosporin to increase their potency against a wider range of microbes. Various analytical methods are used to quantify all five generations of cephalosporin in various matrices. Among all the analytical methods, the High-Performance Liquid Chromatography method is one of the most widely used analytical techniques for the simultaneous determination of cephalosporins and their combination formulations. This review offers a comprehensive summary of the analytical method via High-Performance Liquid Chromatography of available cephalosporins in different pharmaceuticals and biological fluids.
